Germany's Options in Afghanistan
In the October/November issue of Survival, Timo Noetzel, Senior Policy Advisor to the Chairman of the Munich Security Conference, and Thomas Rid shed light on Germany’s options in Afghanistan. The authors argue that Germany’s contribution to the stabilisation of Afghanistan has been limited by political factors in Germany and military factors in Afghanistan. According to Noetzel and Rid, the next German government is likely to adapt its policies only marginally, although the greater instability in Kunduz – and across Afghanistan – increases both the need to act decisively and the risks associated with political paralysis in Berlin.
