Guttenberg Talks to Young Security Policy Experts

The Munich Young Leaders meet international leaders within the framework of the 46th Munich Security Conference

In 2010 the Munich Young Leaders – 25 young politicians and executives from eastern Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, Germany and other NATO member states – will, at the invitation of the Munich Security Conference and the Körber Foundation, have the opportunity to talk to leading security policy personalities from around the world.

In addition to German Minister of Defence zu Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg and Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt, US Senators Joesph Lieberman and John McCain, US National Security Advisor General Jones, Afghan Presidential Advisor Spanta, and Admiral James G. Stavridis, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe will be talking to the Munich Young Leaders about current transatlantic security policy issues. “In foreign and security policy, we need the commitment and the impulses of young-generation politicians” zu Guttenberg has said about the Munich Young Leaders.

In addition to discussion sessions with high-ranking participants of the Munich Security Conference, the young leaders will also be taking part in the regular program of the conference.  This year the Munich Young Leaders include Sven Mikser, Chairman of the Foreign Committee in the Estonian Parliament, Irakli Alasania, opposition politician from Georgia, and Mbarka Bouaida, member of the Moroccan parliament. The Munich Young Leaders come from 20 countries – among them Bahrain, Egypt, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia.

"This is the ideal mix for a truly comprehensive discussion of global issues,” thinks Ashraf Swelam, director general of the prestigious Egypt’s International Economic Forum. Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger, Chairman of the Munich Security Conference, has emphasized that “The Munich Young Leaders is a project that points ahead to the future. Here we are providing a platform for the security policy decision-makers of tomorrow.” Klaus Wehmeier, Vice Chairman of Körber Foundation’s Executive Board, has pointed out that “in addition to participation in the Munich Security Conference, the Munich Young Leaders are going to become part of an international security policy network that links up the leaders of the future.”
