MSC Chairman Ischinger meets Qatari Minister of Foreign Affairs Al-Thani

The chairman of the Munich Security Conference, Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger, met today with Qatari Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani for a detailed discussion.

Just ahead of the meeting, the Minister had met the German Minister of Foreign Affairs Sigmar Gabriel as well as the President of the German Bundestag Norbert Lammert. The conversation centered on potential steps to de-escalate the current crisis between Qatar and its Arab neighbors, which decided to boycott the country at the beginning of the week.

Ambassador Ischinger expressed his deep concern that the current crisis could escalate and welcomed that Qatar is not taking any steps to escalate the situation. He also welcomed the country’s apparent interest to find a rapid solution to the crisis. "We need common efforts by the EU, the US and the Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Sabah to defuse the situation. This must be moment for diplomacy! The last thing the Middle East needs is a conflict between Arab states with potentially destabilizing consequences for the entire region as well as for Europe’s energy security." Ambassador Ischinger asked the Qatari Minister to extend an invitation to His Highness the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani to participate in the next Munich Security Conference in February 2018.
