"At the Munich Security Conference, we will closely monitor the follow-up by member states and will keep the future of EU defense as a priority item on our agenda," the chairman of the Munich Security Conference stressed.

Last Tuesday, the European Council approved the "European Union Global Strategy," which was prepared under the leadership of the EU High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.

"The strategy ‎charts an ambitious but necessary global strategy for a more united EU," Wolfgang Ischinger, chairman of the Munich Security Conference, remarked on this occasion. "If the EU shows it can deliver on security, support among voters for the EU will increase again! In particular, I am glad to see that the strategy paper stresses the need for Europe to assume greater responsibility in security policy – and to enhance the EU's joint capabilities. Having lobbied for years for more pooling and sharing among EU members, I strongly support the call for member states to 'move towards defence cooperation as the norm.' Equally welcome is the proposal to install an annual review process on defense planning and capability development," Ischinger said and continued: "At the Munich Security Conference, we will closely monitor the follow-up by member states and will keep the future of EU defense as a priority item on our agenda."
