Towards a Transatlantic Energy Alliance - MSC Roundtable Energy Security in Istanbul

About thirty political decision-makers, industry executives, and other experts came together in Istanbul yesterday for the Munich Security Conference’s Energy Security Roundtable (ESR) and debated the prospects for a "Transatlantic Energy Alliance" as well as other urgent international energy issues. The discussion also centered on Europe’s energy strategy in the wake of the Ukraine crisis and the future role of the Middle East in global energy supply.

The Energy Security Roundtables form part of a series of events on energy security co-organized by the MSC and Frankfurter Allgemeine Forum, the main conference of which is the annual Energy Security Summit.

The Istanbul Roundtable, convened on the sidelines of the Atlantic Council Energy & Economic Summit at the summer residence of the German ambassador to Turkey, allowed select leaders the opportunity to debate in an exclusive and intimate setting. US Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz was among the participants.

In May, the MSC and Frankfurter Allgemeine Forum had hosted the second Energy Security Summit in Berlin, which featured, among many other decision-makers, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk. This discussion was now continued in Istanbul.

The next Energy Security Roundtable will take place at the sidelines of the 51st Munich Security Conference from 6 to 8 February 2015. The 3rd Energy Security Summit (ESS) will take place in Berlin on 6/7 May 2015 under the patronage of Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Federal Minister for Economics and Energy Sigmar Gabriel. Other high-ranking decision-makers who have already confirmed their active participation in the conference include the President of the Federation of German Industries Ulrich Grillo, the Lithuanian Minister of Energy Jaroslav Neverovič, the Minister of Oil and Gas of Oman Mohammed bin Hamad Al Rumhy, and the Algerian Minister for Energy Youcef Yousfi.
