Supported by the Norwegian Government, MSC and ONS have organized, as part of the MSC Energy Security Series, the "ONS Summit", a joint meeting on energy security and security of supply in Stavanger on 28 and 29 August 2016, immediately preceding this year's ONS Conference and Exhibition.
Co-chaired by ONS President and CEO Leif Johan Sevland and MSC Chairman Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger, about 60 key leaders from the energy industry, politics and the security community met for off-the-record discussions on global energy trends, their geopolitical and industrial implications, and the challenges they pose to companies and states.
Daniel Yergin, Vice Chairman of IHS Markit, one of the world's leading energy experts, moderated the event. Among the meeting's participants were the CEOs of major industry leaders, such as Statoil, Shell, ConocoPhillips, Eon and Wintershall as well as senior representatives from Saudi Aramco, eni, and Iran's National Oil Company.
Prime Minister Erna Solberg, Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende, and Minister of Petroleum and Energy Tord Lien represented the Norwegian government at the meeting. Participants also included the Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs, and his Lithuanian colleague Linas Linkevičius, as well as other Cabinet Ministers from around the world.
Ahead of the meeting, the two organizers emphasized:
"The intersection of energy and security is becoming ever more important. What is the role of energy in critical rivalries today, both in Europe and in the Middle East? In what respects is energy being used as a political weapon today? How are European diversification efforts coming along, and what should next steps look like? These are questions of enormous importance for both the energy industry and the international community. This is why I very much look forward to discussing these and other critical issues at our joint MSC-ONS meeting." (Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger)
"We are delighted to team up with Munich Security Conference for this year's ONS Summit. The MSC brings an extensive knowledge and network on security policy to the table, and in combination with the ONS' comprehensive energy network the scene is set for fruitful discussions. Predictable terms and conditions, and stable investment climates is crucial for the energy industry. By bringing industry and political leaders together, we aim to add knowledge and dialogue on these increasingly important issues for the industry." (Leif Johan Sevland)
The ONS Foundation is organizer of one of the world’s leading energy meeting places. Its bi-annual Conference, Exhibition and Festival combines technical, managerial and governmental aspects of the industry and attracted more than 90.000 visitors from around the world in 2014.
