MSC Chairman Wolfgang Ischinger commends decision by Macedonian President to rescind amnesty measures
The Chairman of the Munich Security Conference (MSC), Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger, commends the decision by Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov to step back from his decision to pardon various Macedonian politicians: "This is an important signal to easen the domestic political crisis in Macedonia. I hope that Macedonia has come a step closer to conducting elections as envisaged earlier this year".
During the refugee crisis Macedonia has become a major actor as one of the main transit points on the so called Balkan route. Domestic stability in Macedonia, therefore, is of strategic importance far beyond its own borders. By the decision not to stop lawsuits against various politicians, Macedonia follows one of Germany's and the EU's major demands to conduct elections on the basis of the Przno-Agreement. "Free and fair elections under the rule of law and on the basis of free media and an updated electoral directory are one of the most important preconditions for Macedonia's Euro-Atlantic integration process which deserves our full support", so the MSC Chairman.
